rear tires - need to replace both or just one? (archive)

Just a question to see if I got talked into buying more than I needed:

I've had my new 540i for only 6 months now, but my right rear tire started leaking air - last weekend, the tire went flat overnight, so I drove to a Wheel Works to either get it fixed or buy a new one.

The guy there looked at it, showed me the 4-5 inch line along my sidewall where it was leaking - it was raining all day so the tires were wet and I could actually see the bubbles. He told me because it was so long and on the sidewall, fixing was not a good idea. Which made sense, so I said ok, I'd like a new tire. My current tires were the standard Bridgestone Sports that comes with the 540i 6speed.

I've only got barely 8000 miles on these tires, but he then told me I should really buy two new tires, to completely replace the rear set. He said that just buying one new tire to replace my right rear tire would be really bad because of a) different thread depths in the two tires, and b) having two different tires on a rear differential car was bad.

I pretty much understood none of this and just went with his advice and bought two brand new Bridgestone S-02 tires - including mounting, balance, BMW alignment, etc, the total bill was $843. I could have saved $52 on the tire insurance, but I figured what the hell, I'd probably run over some nail the next day if I didn't take their insurance.

So I'm not complaining about the bill - it's probably a bit more than if I had shopped around, but I'm wondering whether I really needed to buy two new tires as the guy explained I needed, or whether it was just a load of sales crap?
