Due to weather, it's taken me nearly two months to accumulate 850 miles on my 540iA. BTW, don't let anyone fool you - these cars are absolutely allergic to snow/ice. I mounted 10mm wider Bridgestone S02s (on BBSs) and they spin uselessly on (seemingly) 1/4" of snow in billiard table smooth conditions. In any case, I gave up on breaking in the engine at about 300 miles. Originally I was thinking of buying a Porsche C-4 and at that time had read about their factory testing program. It seems that in addition to extensive high speed braking tests, they run each engine (on a test stand, I believe) at redline for 60 seconds. I also seem to remember that BMW does something similar (anyone know?). Doesn't that tend to negate all of us who try to really "go easy" on the car for the first 1200 miles? Help me alieviate my guilt!
