: : -Anybody know differences between '99,'00,'01'?
: : Comments on:
: : 1. No limited slip rear?
: : 2. No rack&pinion steering?
: : 3. No double vanos?
: : Sold E36M3 - I know, it's a different car. In the market for E46M3 or 540i. Interested in 540i but want to make the right decision.
: : >>Any opinions greatly appreciated.
: 1. True.
: 2. Right
: 3. Who cares?
: Oversall, the stuff you mention are features that in peactice have no real bearing on overall enjoyment. A limited slip might be useful, but with DSC in normal use you don't sense msny trsaction problems at all. I don't race and don't drive in snow, however.
: 2. The steering feel is great for a car of this size and weight, but it won't have as much feel as your E36, or a 528 for that matter. The V8 more than makes up for that.
: 3. A true who cares. Most people report that
: there is no noticable difference in feel between no VANOS and single VANOS. Double VANOS for the V8 is of course reserved for the M5. More horsepower would always be nice, but I wouldn't care how they arrived there. In practical terms the 4.4L engine is a marvel of smoothness and refined power, but I guess it would be nice if it pulled more as the revs rose, and had more power down low. Don't fret though. It's a winner regardless.
I agree - the 540 6speed in any form is the best all around car you can buy for a reasonable price. I thought that before my most recent updates-Dinan computer reprograming, cold air induction and Remus exhaust-now all I can say is Wow!!! These modifications truly dial the car in. I highly recommend others do the same. Now for the suspension any thoughts from others on Dinan,H and R, Eibach AC Schnitzer? How about shocks-Koni versus Bilstein? Thanks.
