Just a quick reply for what I've noticed with my '99 540i with the steptronic automatic and sport package.
First, the lowered rear axle ratio of the '99 and newer sport packages makes a big difference launching the car. I drove a '98 540i automatic with sport package and a '99 back to back. You would need more revs from the '98 to feel the same launch.
Second, the traction control can really zap the power if you over do it. Switching it off and getting just the right amount of wheel spin gives the best results. Don't over do it or you'll just burn the rubber right off the tires!
BTW, I just raced a late model Integra GS-R last week. I wasn't expecting a race so he got the head start. I was just past him when we caught up to traffic at 70mph. I did beat him but just barely. That little 4 cylinder engine was screaming at readline to keep up. With a better launch I should have been several car lengths ahead.
