I called Redline and they stated to me that MTL, Manual Trans Fluid, could be used but they recommended their Automatic Trans Fluid for the E39. Tolerances for gear mesh has been tightened for all new BMW's ; therefore there was a concern w/ factory spec viscosity not being met when using MTL. But in all likelihood, using MTL is not as bad as NOT CHANGING THE OIL at all.
At 25k miles, I changed out the factory oil, which came out looking somewhat milky and dark
colored instead of light golden brown. I used MOBIL 1 Automatic Trans Fluid. THis so called lifetime oil BMW touts is fine and dandy for marketing, but in the real world this is moot if there's not any sort of filtration used.
At the same time, I also changed out the Differential oil w/ MOBIL 1 75W90. I expected the differential oil to be more contaminated than the manual, but it was the opposite in my case. THe diff oil came out looking very clean.
When my car hits 50k, I'll look forward to doing this change again. This time, I'll put in BMW transmission fluid instead. I sort of like the idea of a light color brown fluid instead of the red color so I can see how dirty it gets when I drain.
: I tried this first in my '97 540/6 and had great results; now have it in my '00 540/6. No more draggy shifting into second when cold, can't fool the synchros, and seems to be quieter - but perhaps this is only wishful thinking.
