When I bought my 97 540ia I noticed the passengers seat went back further than the drivers seat. I checked out the tracks and found a 2 inch black clip on the inside rail towards the back. The passengers seat did not have this clip. I removed the clip so the drivers sead would go back as far as the passengers seat. If I did not discover this I would have sold the 540 or modified the sead bolts to move the seat back. I think the clip is there as a marketing feature so you'll not have enough room in the 540 for some people and will trade it in for a 740 which doesn't have the clip with more leg room. I first posted the seat rail clip and many have removed it since. You should to. Don't be fooled by the trick clip to keep the seat from going fully back. have a nice day and enjoy you car.
: I sure would love another inch or two of leg room(especially on long highway drives), but what is the downside of removing this pin? Doesn't BMW put it there for a reason?
: Thanks in advance
