: Considering buying 540i sport (6spd) but got confused after visiting edmunds.com (re: 1998 model):

It has been said that auto's are faster, manuals are faster, etc. I could not resist to chime in here with a point of view that I hope you will all welcome.

Back in the 1900's, :-), I did a bit of drag racing at the local tracks. Now being a low-bucks guy, I would borrow a part here or there from a friend. I drove a high 10 sec (sometimes low 11's) car which required a blast sheild at one track so I used a auto there and a four gear where I could.

I can say without a doubt, that the four gear would get better times, and shifted quicker, near instantly with cliped syncros and clipped gears, very little clutch was used, but, not as consitantly. The auto was modified yet shifts had to be "requested" before need, that is to shift at 8,400 rpm, you have to shift at about 7,600 if you wait until 8,400 you might have a big pile of hemi parts on the track! Same is true if you tried a shift and missed it with the stick... The auto was more consitant, but not as fast. Also ran in a slower class.

OK, long story -now that I have everyone's attention, here are the points I want to make:

1. BMW's are class and luxury, not made for high schoolers that "wanta burn rubber".

2. There is a trend for people to prefer autos in full size Cad's and sticks in Porsches. A 540 IMHO, is a bit of both, so whatever bit you like the most should be addressed.

3. If there are any people immature enough to drag race on a public street, I hope they don't kill any members of my family. I have seen this happen to a young girl on a bicycle and the death ruined many lives.
When you drag race a pimple faced kid with a Civic, immaturely risking innocent lives, you have lost your dignity at the start weather or not you "win".
BMW should say wealth, class, intelligence, not immature fool.

Forgive the spelling and puncuation, I'm thinking of nothing but pieces of an 11 year old girl smashed into a mangled car with an injured driver and dead passinger. I don't want to revisit this post for editing and I hope no one on this board ever has such an experiance. I'll bet the driver wishes he was dead. -Someone may give him his wish if he shows his face again.
