: : That's rare; a complement of the BMW sound system. A lot of people (not even golden ears) with premium sound have replaced the system with aftermarket solutions for bass and distortion reasons.
: : I think this alludes to the fact people have different standards. Some believe the price of the 5 series should equate to "better" than cheaper offerings. This includes outperforming civic's stop light to stop light. If the 5 series simply tries to be a blend of "ok" technologies, it would cease to be a BMW. Performance of cars in general is on the upswing and BMW knows this and is upgrading (rumored 320HP 540 and the 530 replacing the 528). My take is the 540 is a little behind the curve and that won't help much. It needs more to compensate for its weight. The better appointed and performing M5 does not have sufficient availability to provide a reasonable alternative and alienates the larger pool of automatic tranny folks.
: : So all of this means don't be surprised if people are alarmed and post on this board when they find their 5 series to be inferior to cheaper cars in one way or another. They should be, and hopefully the feedback is very valuable to making the next version of the car better.
It looks to me that you are comaring apples with oranges. 540i was beaten by a heavily modified Civic. The beauty of 540 6 speed, at least for me, is that under 10K you can build upper 10 quater mile rocket which would handle like a Porshe and, at the same time, carry you from East to West coast in comfort and style. Ah, yes, and three more members of your family and their laggage. Try to spend an hour in "cheaper cars" whith similar performance: your rear end, back, as well car parts, start falling apart. I drove 1999 Viper for about two hours: I will never, never drive it again. It is a fast car but ergonomics and basic comfort were part of the design. See my point ?
