Radio mute w/o BMW phone - can it be done? (archive)

I searched the archives and found only one reference on how to do this - on E46 3 series. I have a '00 528i Sport w/ the M-wheel/controls and want to be able to mute the radio with either the cellular phone button on the left or the "R/T" on the right. Can this be done if I don't have the built-in phone. Is changing the country code on the radio settings the only way?
