: I recently purchased a 97 528 with automatic trans. It has a noise that sounds like snow tires that starts at about 40mph. It gets less noticeable when you reach 55mph. I have replaced the tires to no avail. I took it to a large dealer. They also heard the noise, checked "everything" and found nothing. They told me its probably becasue BMWs are built so tight, that the noise make be coming from the engine mounts. Other cars have softer mounts. What a bunch of crap I say! The only other way I can describe the noise is that its like being in an airlock. Any ideas??????
I'm not sure from your description what kind of noise you are getting, perhaps you could be more specific...where it seems to come from, etc. If it is a whine or sound that rises with speed, it could be a wheel bearing. There haven't been any reports of failed wheel bearings that I can remember seeing on the forum, and it would take much hard driving and cornering to wear them out on a new car, but that'sone guess. Wheel bearings tend to increase in pitch with speed, and eventually go away (the bearings AND the noise!) as speeds rise!
