Although the 540i (both E34 and E39) are powerful machines, I doubt you will have any difficulty controlling the car. You will find that you won't have to floor it in order to get power out of it. Torque down low is the name of the game. Even though the power can actually be excessive at times, having that extra "headroom" (sorry for the audio influence) is very nice. You will be able to use it to squirt into a hole in traffic like a teflon coated torpedo.

Are you getting a job at a bulge bracket I-Bank? If you do well (perhaps as an analyst) you might not have to wait two years to get yourself a nice new E46 M3 :-)
