In Reply to: 4-banger to 528i. Will power be enuff? (more) posted by Jay S. on February 27, 2000 at 21:36:17:

When I purchased my 8088 6 mhz PC, I didn't know what I'd do with all the power and a 10 meg HD! Well, times change. I don't mean to say that you will want more power later. I do mean to say that power is relative to preceptions and alternatives. Surely the 528 has more power than anyone *needs* for transportation! Is it the fastest on the road, no. I haven't seen the fastest car on the road, don't know if it's a daily driver. :-) Is the 528 a Cambry... Well I drove one that belonged to my mom. She loved it and it was a great car for what it did, I'd like to think Cambrys are friends of mine, but, they ain't no 528! :-) Performace, image, and pride of ownership will all make you very happy with either a 528 or 540 IMHO. Of course, drive one, better yet, rent a loaner if you can for a day or two. It's not the last car you will own, if you want to move to a larger motor next time you can.

Happy motoring,
Bob
: Hi,
: I've read through the archives and am really not interested in the E39 540i vs 528i debate.
: Facts:
: 1.Graduating and looking at a CPO-ed 528i.
: 2.Moving to NYC so not much chance of flooring it
: 3.Car nut (worked in garage for 6 months) so want power
: 4.Last car was a nice but BORING ol' '94 camry 4-cyl.

: Will there be enough power in the 528i for me not to worry or be grumpy at not having got an E34 540i? I hated the fact that my "floatmobile" had to be FLOOOREEDD all the way to get anywhere. The 3rd-rate power:weight ratio in the Camry was no help. I'm not interested in the 3-series - too small and barebones.
: Finally, I expect few chances to actually floor it in NYC. This is gonna be my daily driver car.
: Comments would be appreciated.
: Thanks!
: - J.
