Had to replace a rear bulb on my E36, but couldn't use a $1 1157 bulb, continued to get the "Bulb Out" message. I had to get a BMW version for $2.50 each.

Basically, you need a dual filament bulb. I hear that some auto stores carry Sylvania bulbs that work like BMW bulbs.

: You can purchase these lights at any major automotive store. I bought mine at Pep boys. The bulbs were made by Sylvania and allow for both watts, one for the turn signal and the other for the light itself.
