: This one has been beaten to death too but, I still am having hard time cutting through to the facts.
: I've spoken with a number of Car Audio "experts" and they seem to disagree as to which is more important for upgrading my E39 Premium stereo. I'd like to get the best bang for the buck. ADS seems to think the speakers are crap and recomend replacing them and adding amplifiers. Others think the speakers and wiring are top notch and they just need proper amplifiers and subwoofer.
: In most all cases the upgrade cost seems to be around $1600-$2300 to get the most out of my system.
: Any other thoughts here?
First rule: Remember that the experts stand to gain your business - which takes precedence, selling you gear or satisfying your needs in the most cost effective manner???
1) Define what is wrong with the sound you have now. My observation on radio alone was lacking highs and low bass. When I went to a good Dolby metal tape recording and or CD input, highs were fine, low bass missing.
2) What kind of music and how loudly do you want to listen ? I find the cabin of the 528i pretty quiet, so high volume levels are not necessary just to hear the music. The kinds of music I listen to do not include "hear it a block away bumpa thumpa boom boooooom" bass.
3) Personally, I took the incremental approach and started by simply adding ( a al A/D/S ) and added a 10" JBL sub in a sealed enclosure driven by a 240 watt (Bridged) Blaupunkt amp w/ built in low pass filter. This combination of stock system plus powered acoustic suspension sub has resulted in a very satisfactory sound system FOR MY EARS and music taste.
4) Search this site - much has been posted on this topic - and it provided me the technical data needed for me to implement the changes described above by myself.
