Ira,
It depends. Got an extra 8-10 grand, aren't too worried about 0-60 times? Buy the 740 tomorrow.
I have owned the following since 1985:
79' 528i
94' 325ia 4dr
97' 528ia
and, due in 4 weeks, a 540ia sport.
For me (31 year old married with one child working in outside sales), there's only one choice.
In fact, if I was going to spend the extra bucks on the 740, I'd probably go nuts and get an M5.
I've driven the 740i, it's a more comfortable, mature vehicle. I'm just not there yet!
I will say this: Far better to wait for what you truly want, then get a close second immediately. Besides, the anticipation of having is often better than the harsh reality of it actually sitting in your garage! (With squeaky doors and a rattling sunroof!)
Hope this helps.

: I currently have a 540ia sport on order for a May delivery. Today I went to the dealer to check in my choice of seats (sport or comfort). When I was there, I saw a new 740i sport in the exact color and with the exact options that I want. The key is I can have the 740 now, and must wait for the 540 until late May. I like the now part. I also like the rear passenger leg room.
: I know these are two very different cars, but I am looking for opinions from people who have driven both as to the relative pros and cons of each.
: Thanks
