From what I have been reading, only the BMW Digital StarTac will work properly with your BMW. Any "outside" Digital StarTac can only be charged by the in-car kit - it cannot interface with BMW electronics - so it will not give you any information on your MID, nor will you be able to control it from the steering wheel.
