Re: 740i Sport (archive)

Thanks for all the input.... I remain undecided. I test drove the 740 sport today at some length. I really liked the feel. While the acceleration was obviously not the same as the 540, it was very close (much more spirited than my 97 528). And the handling was superb (again very close in feel to the 540). I also liked the extra space and some of the features not found on the 540.
Here is the rub. I cannot get over the fact that it looks like an old person's car. I know this is shallow and has more to do with my own feelings at mid-life (I am 43), but that is how I feel. I drove the 740 to my house to show it to my wife and she said that it looks like something her father would drive. I showed pictures of both to my kids and they both said the 740 looks boxey. My 12 year old said the 540 looks like a sports car and the 740 like a limosine.

I suspect that the 2003 model of the 740 will address some of these issues as BMW is likely to enhance upon the current 3 and 5 series styling.

So, I am left with the dilemna of whether I buy the 740i sport tomorrow for Friday delivery or whether I wait till May for my ordered 540ia sport.

I will sleep on it.
