Like a lot of others on this board, I was disappointed with the $1200 DSP upgrade for the 528i, so I opted for the standard stereo. I just recently had the a/d/s/ Upgrade I installed (larger amp, large sub) and I detect a major difference. The sound is definitely much 'cleaner' and the bass has that good 'thump'. The only downside is the installer had to build a 4" wide box for the sub and install it at the back of my trunk, thereby losing some trunk space. I had the upgrade (and my previously purchased Nakamichi CD-Player) installed for less than $1000. I found the factory speakers to be fine. I think this is a much better upgrade than the DSP option.
Note: The Nakamichi in-dash CD changer was far too tight in my 528i glove compartment, so I had it installed under the trunk lip. Since it is so small, it doesn't really get in the way. The new amp was installed in the well where the trunk CD changer is usually installed. Also, don't believe the a/d/s website regarding an easy plug-n-play installation for a BMW. My installer said their upgrade was as difficult to install as any other manufacturers products.
