steering column doesn't return to memory position? (archive)

Two week old 2000 528i. Unlocking w/ remote key moves the steering column in and up all the way. Putting the key in the ignition to station two and starting does not return it to preset outer location, but does adjust it slightly down per memory. I must press memory # on door panel to have it return to preset location? Anyone have an idea of what is wrong, if anything? It seems to me that the key memory should restore steering column to the memory position?
