I had the same problem in 12/98. Dealer said they couldn't get the car, "In Spec", with the 17" wheels. Everyone (tire rack, Dinan, BMP) felt this was bunk, since the e39 has a fully adjustable rear suspension. Thought about adjustable camber plates, however no one makes them.
So, in 8/99, got new tires, wanted a new aligment. Magically, with a newer "software" program on the alignment machine, everything went into place. Dealer was nice enough to admit the previous mistake and paid for the new rear tires.
Moral: the e39 does have more negative camber than most cars, thus helping the car handle better (at least in the corners). However, too much negative camber will eat the insides of your tires like a drunk at White Castle.

: The other day some one pointed out that the rear wheels
: have a lot of negative camber. The car is a 528i with upgraded 17" 540 sport wheels. Has anyone noticed this too or is this normal?
