This may be stupid but a company called Nextel has a national network, phones and technology made by Motorola. If BMW adopted this technology we would be able to go anywhere in the 50 states and have coverage instead of all the problems with regional providers cdma, tdma, 1900,800, analog etc. Maybe we should email BMW to provide us with a solution instead of the frustration of there limited offering.

Thanks for listening.

: Within the past week I installed the StarTAC install kit along with the BMW StarTAC into my E39. Today I took out the BMW StarTAC and replaced it with a non-BMW StarTAC specifically the ST7760. Strangely, it did not smoke as a fellow board member had been informed by a BMW Dealer but rather the non-BMW StarTAC just powered on and off repeatedly. Otherwise no functions worked like the handsfree, steering wheel controls, etc. So it seems to me that unless there are different verisons of the non-BMW StarTAC that may work better with your BMW then I suggest you buy the expensive BMW StarTAC if you really want to use the features of the car.

: As for the smoking that was supposed to have occurred (check previos posts from within the past week), It's no surprise to me that a salesman would make up a story just to sell his/her merchandise.
