Pad soot on wheels (archive)

I just took delivery of a 1999 528i with the 16" spoke wheels. In three days of driving, brake pad soot has really darkened up the wheels. I don't mind washing them, but I've heard that there are aftermarket 'soot protectors' (that I just assume must mount behind the wheel). Anyone heard of these or had any experience with them? If they're for real, work, and don't affect brake performance or safety, anyone know where I might get them? Thanks
