: I've been offered a 1996 518i touring, good price, low miles, nice car. I've always had a 3 series up to now and I have heard that the 4 cyl 1800cc lump is not man enough for the 5. Has anyone any experience of this? I don't want to set any land speed records but equally I don't want the engine to give up after a few miles because it has to work so hard. Also, what kind of mpg could I expect?

: Thanks for the advice.

You must be from out of U.S.! We have not had the 4 cyl 5ers. 1.8 liter's a bit low IMO in the hp/torque dept for the touring OR sedan. Now, if you've been offered such a smoking deal that you can drop a 2.8 to 3 liter E36/E46--esp E36 3/3.2 L M3--motor in it, that might be a different story!.
