This is how it works on my 97 528i:
1) insert your key
2) press the trip odometer reset botton and don't let go (the odometer should light up)
3) turn your key to position 1 (ie. first position, your onboard computer should light up)
4) turn your key back to position 0 (while keep pressing the reset button)
5) turn your key again to position 1 and now the outside temp should be in F)

you can repeat the procedure get it back in celsius.
