I've had a large number of occurrences of this problem. The design of the brakes appears to trap small stones next to the brake disc. I have always been able to dislodge the stones by reversing (sometimes you need to back up quickly i.e. 15 mph or so, in order to dislodge the stones).

BMW should do something about this.
