Front Windshield Defroster Question (archive)

Whenever I need to defog the front windshield, I push the front winshield defog button on the AC control and the air recirculates to the front windhield, as expected, but also the fan turns up to the highest setting and the highest heat. This is fine for the first 15 seconds and it does the job, but, what if I need to keep it on for an extended period of time?

For example, I was driving this morning and for about 45 minutes at one point during the trip a light cool drizzle was hitting the windshield fogging up the front windshield. I can't keep that power blower on hight heat for 1/2 hour - too loud and too hot. But, when I try to turn the fan down, it resets to normal air flow out of the front vents. The temp controls don't help either when on defog mode. I cannot keep it set on low and defog for an extended period. Thus, I had to keep on turning it on and off every 5 or 6 minutes.

This can't be right, can it? Why is there no 'low' defog setting?
