After an extended 2.5 hour drive at pretty 'liberal' (or should I say liberating) open road speeds, I parked at location and re-started 3 days later for the trip home. The low coolant chime came on after about 5 seconds. Stopped at a gas station before we got started and, sure enough, it was low. Did the 50-50 antifreeze top-off and away we went.
Question: Does driving long distances at fast speeds 'burn' (or use) any coolant? It is possible that the coolant was never topped off (car is 6 months old) but never got a chime before and this was the first long trip. I will monitor in future but curious if coolant depletion is normal in these circumstances. I thought the system was a 'closed' system?
Thanks...
Adam
p.s. If anyone cares, took the 540 from Baltimore to West Virginia golf resort for a few days - - what a drive - - 70W to 68W to Morgantown and back. No cops, very long open roads with few cars, really a chance to open her up a few times. Great drive - especially when the Honda wanted to race for a few miles. It wasn't a race anymore after 2,000 feet, but since he started it, I wanted him to see me drive off and fade into the sunset :)
