For a more pragmatic estimate, check out what '98 540's are selling for right now. I've seen them for $40-$45K. Since they were roughly $55K new, that means a 73%-82% "residual".

BTW, buying is always better than leasing (in the US at least) unless you cannot otherwise afford the car or are using the car for a business.

: Trying to compare leasing vs. buying outright - I always want a new car after 2 years, but keep my car in pristine condition so it might be better to buy?
