Alarm activation intermittant (archive)

Has anyone else had problems with their alarm intermittantly failing to beep (i.e. activate) upon pressing the button on the key?

I picked my '00 540Ia in January and within a month or so, I noticed the problem. Back then it was very infrequent and it didn't bother me too much. It would only happen once and then I would not see it for a while. It has now gotten much more frequent. In fact, it has not worked at all for the last three days, untill this evening.

Essentially, I press the button and the doors lock, but there is no chirp and the red light under the mirror does not flash. Occasionally I will de-activate and re-activate, to no avail.

I am not excited about the idea of playing cat and mouse with the dealer on a usually, very intermittant problem.

Has anyone else seen this bug? How did you resolve it?
