: : too. ie, nothing happens when you press the button on the key - it happens during the unlocking. My dealer claims that the '99 E39s have IR transmitters and you have to have the key in line-of-sight of the mirror for it to work. LOL, you should see his face when I activated the alarm with the key in my pocket. Moral of the story, read the owner's manual and this forum so you are armed when you go to your dealer.

E39's use both IR. & RF types of remote control systems. And there are 2 types of RF units using different frequencies. These are used in different markets around the world and I am not sure what is used where.

I think the IR key ius different - having onloy one large button next to the ring slot, as opposed to the 2 smaller buttons on the RF unit.

The RF units pick up the signal by the antenna in the back window and process it though a blocking circuit (anti scanning) to the alarm unit and to the general module. There are also digital signals go to the light control module to flash the lights.

If the doors are locking, unlocking all right then the general module is getting the signal. If the chirp is failing then the fault is in the alarm unit.

Suggest you keep a little log of the failurs (noting all appropriate details on each occurance). Then take it to the dealer

Cheers
