: One more question...

: After an extended 2.5 hour drive at pretty 'liberal' (or should I say liberating) open road speeds, I parked at location and re-started 3 days later for the trip home. The low coolant chime came on after about 5 seconds. Stopped at a gas station before we got started and, sure enough, it was low. Did the 50-50 antifreeze top-off and away we went.

: Question: Does driving long distances at fast speeds 'burn' (or use) any coolant? It is possible that the coolant was never topped off (car is 6 months old) but never got a chime before and this was the first long trip. I will monitor in future but curious if coolant depletion is normal in these circumstances. I thought the system was a 'closed' system?

: Thanks...
: Adam

Your coolant should NOT be going down. Those are the "exact words" of my service manager when I reported that my level had be very gradually dropping in the first 12 months after I got it. (never got to the alarm stage but was going down)

The second time they checked it a pressure test found a slight leak in a hose at the rear of the engine. They tightened that and no problem since.

Your long hard drive kept the temperature and pressure up, and if there was any slight leakage it would come out as steam - leaving little or no residue.
