I seem to remember Car & Driver running a story on "perfect steering". My memory is VERY foggy on this one but the general thrust went like this:

The featured car was the M3. They, too, detected a certain amount of vibration in the steering wheel. After coming up with several homegrown theories on why this happened, they called BMWUSA who told them that it was normal and the rack-and-pinion setup had, for a number of structural and steering reasons, to virtually sit on the engine at times - creating the vibration.

Anyway, I remember there was something about components causing the vibration and that being the tradeoff BMW made for good steering.

You can retrieve the article from C&D website using the search tool and typing in "M3 steering" or something like that. I would do it right now but am already running late!

Dunno if this applies to the 528 but it's interesting reading anyway.
