Example: 235/45R-17 94W

The tire is approximately 235mm from sidewall to sidewall.

The distance from the tread surface to the rim is 45% of that dimension.

It's a radial.

It mounts on a 17-inch rim.

The tire's rated for a 1477-lb load.

It's rated for continuous use at 168mph at some percentage (can't remember what it is right now - 85%?) of its maximum load.

See http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/speed.htm
for more information.

But there's one important consideration they don't mention: Calculated tire dimensions are not always accurate - 235/45-17 tires from two different manufacturers (and even from two tire lines by the same manufacturer) can and do vary in size - a Bridgestone RE71 or S-02 is slightly wider than a Dunlop SP8000.

The only way to find out exactly is to check the spec sheets. Fortunately, many are on the manufacturer's websites these days.
