I replaced a 1998 540i with my 2000 S4. Both great automobiles. The 4.4L 32V V8 in the 540i is nothing less than fantastic. While the power in both cars are comparable, I would guess that a less experienced driver may be able drive the 540i quicker. Who cares anyway.
I am now waiting patiently for an E46 M3!
