odor in ventilation system on 1997 E39 (archive)

I need help on my 1997 E39. It emits a odor that smells
like sour milk after I turn on the air condition. It
happens since car was new. The service adviser in the
local dealer suggested spraying lysol disinfectant into
the air intake under the hood with fan full blast and
all air-vents open. This cures the problem for a few
days and it keeps coming back.
