On 5-15-00 I picked-up my 540ia at the Performance Center in South Carolina. My day started with meeting the staff at the Center and meeting others that also recieved their new cars . We then were taken on a grand tour of the Zentrum and the factory for approx, 2hrs. The factory builds the Z-3 and the X-5 models. After the tour we drove back to the Performance Center where my 540ia was waiting in the glass enclosed del. area. What a feeling to see the car for the first time. I quickly went over and just stood there looking at the car that I had been waiting so long for. After lunch was prepared for all, the delivery specialist went over all the operations of the my car for approx. 2hrs. After The 2hrs I just had to take a ride, What a feeling to be driving this ultimate machine. The day had also included the driving school with you driving a car like the one that you purchased. The driving portion included emergency lane changes from speeds starting at 40mph and going as high as 60mph, ABS braking starting in the 40mph and going onto the 60mph range and steering through a turn that was wet. The third event was driving on a wet road surface and trying to avoid the water walls that were controlled in the control tower by the instuctor. The last event was the skid pad where you tested your skills a keeping you car on a slick concrete surface, this also shower how well the DSP works on the 540. The day ended with good-buys to all and a Thank You to the Staff at the Performance Center. The time had come that I had to make a decision as to stay in Spartanberg or start my trek home to Ca. At 4:30 I started driving thinking I would drive my new baby for 2-3 hrs and stop for the night in the Smokey Mountain area, well I was enjoying the car so much that I couldn't stop and drove till about 11:30 . After A overnight stay I woke-up early to a great morning drive in the Tenn. backroads area. The car drives so nice that you just don't want to stop. Well the next 4 days of driving were a pleasure. The 540 ran flawless with a average mpg of 24,and average speed of 65mph. Hope that I didn't bore all but the experiance is one that will last for a long time. Thanks
