Thanks for the input. I got the info on Superlube from Jim C and bought the real stuff (located the manufacturer). Did't really help. Seals were quited for a week or so.
: : I have a '97 540i and it is on the fifth set of door seals (the latest are the same as those on the '00 models). NOTHING has helped. I have followed BMW's maintenance recommendations (i.e. no wax, silicons, etc)but after about 1000 miles of replacement, the noise returns. Quite honestly I do not believe BMW nor its dealers really have a full fix. Some cars just can't be cured, and I have one of them. The only cure is to drive with the windows slightly opened. Apparently there will be no real fix until the E39 is replaced in 2003 or 2004.
: : : 1997 models had a problem with the door seals. They will replace them with the new style door seals and it should take care of it. Many 1997 and 1998 owners have experienced this same problem.
: : : : The door seals on my '97 540iA squeak. Do others of you have this problem? I find it unbelievable that a car of this purported quality would have such a problem. Any fixes?
: : : : Thanks.

: Some months ago Jim Cash recommended Super Lube, a teflon based product available in spray cans and in tubes. This stuff works well on the door seal problem and doesn't have the negative side effects of silicone. It's a generally available product...try a large hardware or marine store. I've since found lots of uses for it.
: Make sure you get TRUE Super Lube and not a cheap immitation (grins).
