Difference between 540i and 540ia (archive)

Hey!
this is my first post on this board..
been reading this board for sometime now since im looking to purchase a Bmw 540.

But would like to know the difference between the 540i and the 540ia..

Im leaving my 2000 Camry V6 to the wife and moving up in the world:)

Any comment would be greatly appreciated

Also how is the 540 automatic? does it have steptronic?
