I just faced the same problem. I must have struck some road hazard and damaged the under-surface of the car and had the same -40 degree reading.

I had to replace two components. The first was the temperature sensor. It's about the size of your little finger and plugs into a small two conductor cable with an end fitting. You should be able to find this cable dangling from an internal point in body on the passenger side in front of the front wheel.

The second component was the front inner wheelwell panel, which actually is an "L" shape with a short horizontal run from the wheel well forward. In this horizontal section is small depression into which the temperature sensor is fitted. I was surprised and had a hard time figuring this out since the only section missing was the short horizontal surface, leaving a small gap in the under surface.

Replacing the wheelwell panel and sensor took about 20 minutes. The panel was cheap, about $15. The sensor was about $35.

I also had to replace the transverse under spoiler as well. This was an easy press-on it.

Good luck.
