I'm on my 3d Five Series ('92 525i, '97 528i, '00 540i/6). Prior to these, I had an '88 MB 1903 2.3 with a manual transmission.

General observations:
* In general, folks on this board are more likely to like the Bimmer.
* The MB's transmission was notchier -- especially as it got older -- than any other car I've ever owned.
* You cannot get a manual transmission in any MB sedan. (Perhaps that's not an issue for you.)
* My observation of MB sport suspensions is that they handle well, but ride as though suspended on bricks. The BMW sport suspensions seem to be as good (or better) on cornering, and far superior in impact harshness, compliance, and general ride.
* You cannot get a real trip computer in an MB E-class. Some of the BMW OBC functions (ETA, etc.) are simply not available on the E Class.
* I'm not sure if the nav system is available on the E Class. I'm on my second car with one, and cannot imagine owning a car -- especially a premium car such as these -- without it.
