John,

The only phone that works is the bmw 7000 startac. I paid $495 from Circle bmw, I got the cdma model.

Others have complained because the phone is not eligible for the low-cost ATT and Verizon no-roaming charge plans (no PCS capability), but you may be able to get around that (I did!). If you leave the phone in the car, this may not be too much of a concern.

The system works great. I didn't install the compensator, and probably won't since the reception is fine w/out it.

: Thanks, Dave: perfect!

: Assume $344 +$15 cable from Circle BMW was less the phone? Did you supply your own phone? What model, cost?

: Tks again, John

: : Here's my post on how I installed the startac into 2000 528, sep99 build. Not very difficult if you have the proper tools available, especially the cable pin extractor.

: : : Anyone on the E39 board installed a BMW digital phone? My car is a 2000 540 - the phone was not avail when the car was delivered last October. I'd like to buy and install the phone myself, having already experienced the local dealer's capabilities.

: : : My last BMW (7 series) had a remote detector (BEL 635), with the control head mounted in the ash tray, and the detector head behind the grille. This was really clean and stealthy, but the detector "false alarmed" a little too much. I checked with Valentine, but their unit can only be hard wired, not truly remoted. Any ideas or recommendations?

: : : Thanks, John
