: Took my '97 540ia in for new door seals as it sounded like crickets had invaded my car. "New" seals continue to squeak. Are the felt seals available for the 540? I've seen them on 740's but not on 540's. Mentioned it to my service rep and he gave me a blank stare. More importantly, will the felt seals stop the insanity?

: Thanks.

Not sure what you are saying here.

If you did get new seals they will only be the ones with the felt like covering on the side that sits agains the body (paint surface along the roof).

And it is only the seals that are on the upper edge of the doors - the ones you see from the outside of the car.

So if you had those replaced and are still getting noise you will have to make sure where the noise is coming from.

It is also possbile that the door catch is making noises, or the door panel itself at any of the points it contacts/attaches to the door body.

So lots of items to check and possible lubricate.

Regarding the question - "will the felt seals stop the insanity?". They will greatly reduce it - but the key seems to make sure you keep the felt surface clean. If it collects moisture and dirt then it seems to start creaking again.

I always rub down the seals thoroughly after washing the car. Use a damp towel and rub across the felt surface several times until you no longer see any residue on the towel.

One item - do not "over" wax the area roof area where the seals make contact. Wax wears off and will buildup in the felt surface, causing dirt and moisture tio be trapped as well. That seems to contribute to more creaking noises.

I only give that area a light waxing a couple times a year, and make sure "all" the seals are cleaned - and treated with a rubber protectant about twice a year - again too often seems to make the situation worse - I now wait till I hear some creaking before I apply any new protectant (Vinylex).

Cheers
