They both have the same engine/drivetrain. The Typhoon was simply the SUV version. Think S-10 pickup (Syclone) and S-10 Jimmy (Typhoon). Becasue the Typhoon is about 500 pounds heavier, it's slightly slower than the Syclone. The Ty does 0-60 in about 5.3-5.5 seconds - stock.
Braking and handling, though, are another story (as you witnessed). Weight transfer to the front was so great that it rendered the rear brakes basically useless. These trucks can even repeat their straight-line performance in the rain. And because the Syclone was produced for only 2 years 1991, 1992 and the Typhoon 2 years (1992-1993) they actually hold their value well - some sort of collectors items today.
