: I need some help. I looking to purchase a 5 series for my wife and my weekend driving. Looking for a 1997- 1999 model in the 30K range. I would like to hear some Pro/Cons on differnt models. I would like the 540i, but is this the best "bang" for your buck?

: Thanks!

528 is "best bang" and 99 is best year, not just because obviously newer and likely fewer miles, but first year of double VANOS valve timing which enhances respnsiveness (of already nice engine, so 98's fine too). If in sunbelt (esp) look for one with rear shades (power rear window/manual sides)--your kids or friends will thank you or them! Slit fold-down rear seats very nice to have (omplaints about rattles on this board notwithstanding/many have solved anyway). Sport vs non Sport is personal preference (as is 5sp vs auto). If you're Mr. Performance, go for it...plenty of good examples out there. Wheels a pain to clean but well worth it. If not particularly performance oriented (but gather you might be with 540 wish), even stock set up is fine and (I think) 99 ws also 1st year the 528 Premium Pkg had stock 16s vs 15s before, which look nicer and are a notch more responsive. If you find out later you want even more responsiveness and can swing it, put on some (proper wheel/tire combo) 17s which will crispen it up even further. Good luck.
