While you are correct that 215 55 16 would be the correct size replacement, BMW recommends (and includes) the 225 55 16 on the non-sport version. I doubt that they change the speedometer calibration for the different size tires (and thus maybe that is why we have the OBC variance with speed?).

The 225 55 16s do work perfect on a sport 5-series. FYI - Tire Rack originally thought that 16" wheels would not fit on a 540 sport due to the brakes (I think they have since corrected this - I HOPE!). But alas the brakes are the same on the sport and non-sport and thus 16" wheels work fine.

Last but not least, you are correct that some better tires for winter are available in the 17" size.
