At least my 2000 does. The manual is not clear however what viscosity it is. They list 0W-X/5W-X and 10W-X.

The manual does also say
"If you are unable to obtain "BMW high Performance Synthetic Oil", you may use small amounts of synthetic oil in between oil changes. Only use oils with the specification API SH or higher.

It then shows that the approved oils are in the SAE classes 5W-30 adn AAE 5W-40.

I have 6,000 miles on my car and am about 1/2 quart down.
