I changed my 540 oil at 2200 miles and used 8 quarts of dealer supplied 5W-40 BMW oil which I believe is made by Valvoline. I paid $3.50/qt which is cheaper than Mobil One at Walmart and now have 6000 miles on the car.

The car has not used any oil at all in the 4000 miles I have driven since the first oil change. So I would guess that I would not have to add any oil between changes even if I follow the BMW maintenance lights which will probably result in oil changes at 12-15K miles.

Oil comsumption can vary with driving conditions and with how the car was broken in, so each 540 will have different oil consumption rates. If you follow the recommended break-in procedure and use the recommended oils your 540 should use virtually no oil between changes.

: I am thinking of ordering a 540i 6 but wish to know one thing.

: What type of engine oil does this car use (10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-60 etc)do you need to add oil in between oil changes. I am asking because the M5 Forum consistently metions the M5 burning oil and for that matter $8.00 per qt 10W-60. I know the 540i has a different engine but just the same I wish to confirm the type of oil and consumption rate if any.

: Thanks in advance.
