While I'd hate to seem as though I'm talking down, I'd also hate to assume you know what a differential is and leave you with an answer that doesn't serve any purpose.

A differential is the part that is responsible for transferring the engines power from the transmission (via the driveshaft) to the rear wheels. The higher the gear ratio, the lower the gearing and the better the accelleration / performance.

Increased performance is why some of us have chosen to install lower geared 3.15 differentials to replace the higher geared 2.83 differentials that came stock in our earlier 540's. Does the pic help?
