I had an Audi a few years ago and oil changes spawned quite a few debates on the message boards. A few things in particular stand out in my memory:

- The engineers know what they're doing, so don't mess with it - change the oil when it tells you to.

- Definately don't change it the first time before 7500 miles, since they ship them from the factory with a special "break-in" oil to further hone the cylinders (never heard of this before).

- No way a filter can function properly after 10,000 miles.

I'm sure BMW's engineering is quite different from Audi's, but any comments on these points? Are any of them applicable?

I would also like to know what the best oil-changing strategy is - don't want to change it every 10k miles and then have to replace the motor at 80 or 100.
