I just bought a spotless '97 540IA White/Tan with 50K for 37.5K, new tires, just serviced, certified for four years/100K. You pay more at the dealer but I think it's worth it. After driving my car for a few days I had a couple of minor bugs, including a loud "clinking" sound from the rear shock area. The dealer gave me a loaner and fixed everything, of course free. The clinking turned out to the be the right rear brake. They put new pads on while they were back there. My point is that you will pay more at a dealer but the peace of mind knowing that there's protection is worth it.
